Hello! This is Somy Land, a reliable Korean mentor for international students and workers. 🇰🇷✨
When you work in Korea or spend time with friends, you sometimes hear happy news about someone's 'promotion'! Simply saying "Congratulations" is nice too, but if you use expressions that deeply acknowledge your friend's hard work and encourage them, your friendship can grow even deeper. In today's lesson, we'll perfectly learn thoughtful expressions that are great to use for a friend who got promoted, as well as Korea's special 'treating culture.' Shall we review the key points together?
✅ Key vocabulary that doubles your friend's joy These are essential words that shine even more when used on a happy day!
Promotion: This is a very joyful and honorable event in which your position or rank at a company goes up.
Assistant Manager: In Korean companies, this is a representative early-level job title that comes after staff employee.
To treat someone: This is the wonderful act of sharing your joy by treating others to food or drinks when something good happens.
✅ Practical congratulatory sentences that come right out of your mouth If you have a coworker or friend around you who got promoted, be sure to say these three sentences out loud!
"I heard you got promoted this time? Congratulations from the bottom of my heart!" (A thoughtful first greeting to offer as soon as you hear the happy news!)
"As expected, you're amazing because you're good at your work too!" (When you want to generously praise your friend's abilities and boost their confidence!)
"Today, in celebration, I'll treat you to a delicious dinner." (When you want to happily buy a meal for a close friend!)
✅ Korea's helpful 'treating' culture If something good happens in Korea, such as a promotion, there is a culture where the person who got promoted buys coffee or a meal for grateful coworkers or friends to express gratitude and joy. This is called 'giving a treat.' On the other hand, if they are very close friends, the friend doing the congratulating may happily say first, "I'll treat you today to celebrate your promotion!" and buy them delicious food. It's a warm culture full of affection where people share happiness, right?
If you have a friend around you who got promoted, use the expressions you learned today and send or say a warm congratulatory message right now! Rather than only knowing it as knowledge, you need to actually say it out loud for it to truly become your skill. See you again in the next class!
