It is the Korea Immigration & Integration Program (KIIP) (사회통합프로그램).

KIIP is a program run by the Ministry of Justice, and it is an educational course that helps foreigners staying in Korea adapt stably to Korean society by learning not only Korean and Korean culture, but also Korean society, history, law, and institutions.

💡 KIIP is more than just a Korean class!

When people first hear about KIIP, they often think, “Is this a Korean class run by the government?”

Of course, you do learn Korean, but that is not all.

The curriculum includes Korean language and Korean culture, as well as basic knowledge needed for life in Korean society, such as social, cultural, political, economic, historical, legal, and geographical topics. 

In other words, it is easy to understand as a program that lets you do Korean study + adapting to life in Korea + preparing for long-term stay at the same time.

🎁 What are the benefits of studying KIIP?

The biggest advantage is that it does not simply improve your Korean ability.

Depending on the KIIP completion stage, the Ministry of Justice gives bonus points for some residence status applications or recognizes that required conditions have been met, and it is also linked to relevant basic knowledge requirements or evaluations in permanent residency and naturalization applications. 

Therefore, KIIP experience can be helpful depending on the residence status you are applying for.

The Level 5 Understanding Korean Society course and the comprehensive evaluation are directly linked to the permanent residency and naturalization process. 

However, it is not applied uniformly in the sense that “if you complete a certain KIIP level, you get a certain number of points for every visa.” Because the recognition method and requirements differ by status of stay, you should separately check the latest requirements for the visa you are preparing for. 

📚 How many levels are there in KIIP?

Based on the Ministry of Justice official materials for 2026, KIIP is broadly composed of Korean Language and Korean Culture levels 0–4 and Understanding Korean Society (한국사회이해) level 5.

The Korean Language and Korean Culture course totals 415 hours, and Understanding Korean Society consists of 70 hours for permanent residency plus an additional 30 hours for naturalization, for a maximum of 100 hours. 

You do not have to take every course from the beginning.

👩‍🎓 Who can participate in KIIP?

According to the current Ministry of Justice guidance, eligible participants are legally staying foreigners who have an Alien Registration Card or a Residence Report Card, as well as people within 3 years after acquiring Korean nationality.

Therefore, international students studying in Korea or foreigners working in Korea may also consider participating if they meet the requirements.

As of June 2026, there are about 380 Ministry of Justice designated operating institutions nationwide, and education is provided at universities, local governments, family centers, and private organizations. 

📱 How do I apply for KIIP?

Applications are processed through Socinet (사회통합정보망).

The basic process is not difficult.

① Socinet membership registration
② Select a level placement method
③ Level placement through a prior assessment or linkage
④ Apply for the course of the assigned level
⑤ Attend classes and take the evaluation

KIIP is a highly useful program if you prepare steadily while you are in Korea, rather than starting in a rush when you suddenly need it for a visa.
