💼 How are 직위, 직책, 직급 different?
All three words are used when talking about a person’s place and role within a company. But the focus is different. Position refers to rank and qualification, role refers to the actual responsibility someone is in charge of, and job level is closer to a grade used for HR management.
직위: This means a job-related position or qualification. It can be used for titles like employee, assistant manager, manager, and department head.
Example: 김 대리님의 직위가 과장으로 승진했습니다. Kim Assistant Manager has been promoted to Manager.
Pronunciation: Gim dae-ri-nim-ui jik-wi-ga gwa-jang-eu-ro seung-jin-hae-sseum-ni-da직책: This means the specific responsibility and authority assigned according to the job. It is used when talking about actual roles, such as team leader, section head, or division head.
Example: 이번 프로젝트의 팀장 직책을 맡게 되었습니다. I have been assigned the role of team leader for this project.
Pronunciation: I-beon deu-ro-jek-teu-ui tim-jang jik-chae-geul mat-ge doe-eoss-eum-ni-da직급: This means a grade subdivided for HR management by combining position and salary step.
Example: 다음 달에 직급이 올라가요.
Pronunciation: Dae-um dal-e jik-geub-i ol-la-ga-yo
For example, when describing one person, you could say that “Mr. Kim, Manager” has position of manager, role of team leader, and job level of manager, level 2. It may be difficult at first, but if you think of it as “the name tag is the position, the assigned work is the role, and the HR grade is the job level,” it becomes a little easier.
