Jeju National University
Jeju National University is a national comprehensive university located on Jeju Island, Korea’s premier tourist destination and a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Since its founding in 1952, Jeju National University has grown into the island’s only flagship national university, proudly embracing its identity as “the campus where Korea’s most unique nature and global exchange meet.” Based on Jeju’s independent and open culture and pristine natural environment, the university offers a distinctive educational experience to both domestic and international students. The greatest strength of Jeju National University lies in its specialized academic structure, which leverages the island’s unique resources and industry-academia cooperation. Departments directly connected to Jeju’s key industries—such as marine science, bioresources, and tourism management—boast top-tier research capabilities nationwide. In particular, the College of Ocean Science has established itself as a hub for domestic and international marine research, using the Jeju sea as its laboratory. The university operates 15 colleges, over 20 graduate schools, and more than 100 departments and majors across fields such as social sciences, humanities, business, natural sciences, IT, medicine, veterinary medicine, and arts and design, strengthening interdisciplinary convergence and practical education. Active industry-academia partnerships with organizations like Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, Jeju Technopark, and various tourism companies expand internship and employment opportunities for students. Above all, Jeju National University features the island’s only national university hospital, a museum, and various affiliated schools (elementary, middle, and high schools), providing strong advantages in community engagement and hands-on experience. Graduates of Jeju National University play pivotal roles in Jeju’s development, serving as leaders in politics, economics, law, culture, and more throughout the local community. The university has produced nationally recognized talents in culture and the arts, such as Park Kyunghwan (singer “Jeju Sonyeon”), Oh Myeol (film director), Jang Ki-young (comedian), and Jin Simon (singer), as well as leaders in business and law like Kim Changhee (former Vice Chairman of Hyundai Engineering & Construction) and Kim Jongbae (former Chief Judge), along with executives at major corporations such as Samsung and Hyundai, YouTubers, and other new-generation influencers. In particular, Jeju National University alumni have a strong presence in Jeju’s administration and politics, wielding significant influence within the local community. With over 70 years of history, Jeju National University has established itself as a cradle of talent connecting the region and the world. For international students, Jeju National University promises “Asia’s highest level of support systems.” As a university certified by the Ministry of Education’s IEQAS (International Education Quality Assurance System), it offers a range of benefits, including exclusive admissions for international students, the government-sponsored GKS (Global Korea Scholarship) program, and various scholarships for international students. Tuition is reasonable compared to major universities in the Seoul metropolitan area, and dedicated dormitories (student residences) for international students are fully equipped. In recent years, more than 500 international students have enrolled annually, and the university provides tailored services such as English-only courses, global exchange programs, Korean language and culture education, mentoring, and legal residency support. Various programs—including cultural excursions, world food festivals, and international student arts festivals—help students adapt to life abroad and build global networks. The university’s Office of International Affairs also offers global opportunities such as dual degree programs, student exchanges, and language training with overseas universities. The Jeju National University campus, blending pristine nature with modern infrastructure, boasts open views at the foot of Hallasan Mountain, spacious lawns, a variety of dining and club spaces, indoor gymnasiums, and a comfortable living environment. Its proximity to Jeju International Airport and downtown Jeju City ensures convenient transportation, and students can experience Jeju’s unique campus culture through events like the Ara Daedongje (school festival).
