Gyeongsang National University
Gyeongsang National University (GNU) is a national comprehensive university located in Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do, in the southern region of Korea. It has established itself as a hub of advanced industry and life sciences. Founded in 1948 as Jinju Agricultural College, GNU has grown alongside the local community for over 70 years and now operates five campuses in Jinju, Tongyeong, Changwon, and other locations, making it the largest higher education institution in Gyeongnam. True to its slogan, "Leader of National Flagship Universities Driving Innovation," Gyeongsang National University boasts differentiated competitiveness through practical education focused on regional industry, advanced technology, and internationalization. GNU’s greatest strengths lie in its specialized fields, which are among the best in Korea, such as aerospace, mechanical engineering, electronics, nano-materials, and marine sciences. Located near the Aerospace National Industrial Complex centered around Jinju and Sacheon, the university actively collaborates with industries in fields like aircraft maintenance, advanced machinery, and materials convergence. The Department of Mechanical Convergence Engineering at the Changwon Campus is linked to the Changwon National Industrial Complex, the largest machinery industry cluster in Korea, strengthening practical education and on-site training, with hundreds of graduates entering related companies each year. In addition to its traditionally strong areas such as agricultural life sciences, fisheries resources, and biotechnology, GNU is continuously expanding future-oriented interdisciplinary majors like big data, artificial intelligence, and nano-bio. With 17 colleges, 9 graduate schools, and over 80 departments, the university offers a wide range of academic choices and has been recognized for its international competitiveness by being selected for national support programs such as the GKS (Global Korea Scholarship). Throughout its long history, Gyeongsang National University has played a central role in balanced regional development in Korea. Since its opening in 1948, it has undergone several milestones, including becoming a national university in 1968, merging with Tongyeong Fisheries College in 1995, and integrating with Gyeongnam National University of Science and Technology in 2021, thus establishing itself as the representative national university in the Gyeongnam region. Over this period, GNU has produced more than 200,000 graduates who have gone on to make their mark in politics, administration, science, the arts, and many other fields. In particular, the university is recognized as a cradle for nurturing key national talent through collaboration with domestic and international research institutes and industries in aerospace, mechanical engineering, and life sciences. The influence of its alumni and faculty, who are active in various sectors of society, is a unique source of pride for GNU. For international students, Gyeongsang National University is a "practical choice" for studying in Korea. As a university certified by IEQAS (International Education Quality Assurance System), which officially recognizes the capacity to host international students, GNU offers tangible benefits such as advantages in visa issuance and scholarships. English-taught courses are available in a variety of departments, including science and engineering, business, and the humanities, and intensive Korean and English language programs are offered through the Language Education Center. Each year, more than 500 international students study at GNU, where they receive systematic, tailored support such as the GKS scholarship, special internal scholarships, and priority dormitory placement. Dedicated support for international students is also robust, with exclusive counseling centers, mentoring, and cultural experience programs, enabling newcomers to quickly adapt to both the university and the local community. GNU’s campuses in Jinju, Tongyeong, and Changwon are designed to reflect the unique characteristics of each city. The Gajwa Campus in Jinju offers a pleasant environment where the city and nature harmonize, while the Changwon Campus is adjacent to an industrial complex, providing abundant opportunities for employment and practical training. The Tongyeong Campus is close to the sea, making it an ideal location for research in marine science and fisheries. All campuses are equipped with modern dormitories, including dedicated spaces for international students. Jinju is conveniently connected to Seoul and Busan by high-speed rail (KTX), and the cost of living is lower than in the metropolitan area, making it economically advantageous. Based on innovation, practicality, and a global network, Gyeongsang National University is ready to help international students turn their dreams into reality.
