Gangneung Wonju National University
National Gangneung-Wonju University, embracing the charms of both the sea and mountains of Gangwon-do and the appeal of two cities, is a leading national university representing the northeastern region of the Republic of Korea. The diverse academic disciplines and vibrant campus life offered across its two campuses in Gangneung and Wonju define the university’s unique identity. Since its transition to a national university in 1950, National Gangneung-Wonju University has grown alongside the local community of Gangwon-do, taking the lead in nurturing talented individuals equipped with both competence and character. The university’s greatest strengths lie in its student-centered education and specialized academic fields. Of its nine colleges, seven are located on the Gangneung Campus and two on the Wonju Campus, with nationwide recognition for excellence in the natural sciences and engineering fields such as bioscience, environmental engineering, and mechanical and chemical engineering. In particular, departments related to bioscience and the environment offer abundant opportunities for practical training and research linked to the region’s natural environment, enabling the cultivation of experts who combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills. The Gangneung Campus, equipped with over 50 lecture halls and state-of-the-art research facilities, and the Wonju Campus, with its expansive 120,000㎡ grounds and more than 20 buildings, each boast academic synergy that reflects the unique characteristics of their respective cities. For five consecutive years, the university has been awarded the “International Education Quality Assurance System (IEQAS)” certification by the Ministry of Education, achieving the top rank in internationalization capacity among national universities in Korea—a source of great pride for the institution. As the region’s first national higher education institution, National Gangneung-Wonju University has led the educational and cultural development of the Yeongdong area of Gangwon-do. Gangneung and Wonju, where the campuses are located, serve as centers of the sea and mountains, culture and industry, respectively, and have produced experts and talented individuals across various fields. Throughout its long history, the university has fostered active autonomy and democratization among faculty and students, and since its days as a college of education, it has produced numerous influential figures in various sectors of society as a cradle for teacher training. The university also fulfills its social responsibility through specialized research institutes such as the Modern Korean Oral History Archive, which conducts regional history research and community service activities. Support systems for international students are also among the university’s strengths. Having received consecutive “IEQAS” certifications since 2013, students can receive additional points when applying for visas and scholarships. Scholarships totaling over 7.5 billion KRW are awarded to enrolled students, with 63.9% of all students benefiting from scholarship programs. All international freshmen are guaranteed dormitory placement, and the university is fully equipped with living amenities such as cooking facilities. In addition, a variety of Korean cultural experience programs, free Korean language courses, and English-taught classes are offered, providing a tailored education system for international students that minimizes language and cultural barriers. The university maintains active international exchanges, including student exchange and dual degree programs, with over 260 partner universities in 54 countries worldwide, offering opportunities to grow into global talent through networks with top-class universities both in Korea and abroad. Both the Gangneung and Wonju campuses are conveniently located at the heart of their respective cities, ensuring easy living and transportation. The Gangneung Campus is situated on flat land near City Hall, boasting a scenic campus landscape where beautiful nature and artistic sculptures harmonize, including the Haeramji pond. The Wonju Campus is nestled among mountains and hills, allowing students to fully experience the changing seasons. At National Gangneung-Wonju University, where comfortable dormitories, a variety of clubs and festivals, and warm exchanges with the local community come together, you can embark on a new challenge toward your future.
