Daegu Catholic University
Daegu Catholic University is a prestigious private institution with the longest history among Catholic universities in Korea, founded in 1914. It operates three specialized campuses—Hyosung, Luga, and Justino—across Daegu Metropolitan City and Gyeongsan in Gyeongsangbuk-do, leading the way in nurturing talent by integrating comprehensive education with the Catholic spirit. Under the founding philosophy of “Truth, Love, and Service,” Daegu Catholic University has guided the region and Korean society for over a century and is now recognized as a “cradle of global human leaders” favored by domestic and international students. Daegu Catholic University is particularly strong in the fields of medicine, nursing, health sciences, as well as various majors in the humanities, social sciences, arts, and engineering. Through the Industry-Academia Cooperation Foundation, the university maintains practical connections with medical institutions and the local community, offers field-oriented training, and provides tailored career guidance, resulting in high employment competitiveness for its graduates. As of 2024, the university has 10,596 undergraduate and 1,445 graduate students, making it a medium-to-large comprehensive university equipped with state-of-the-art educational and research facilities, a museum (exhibiting artifacts from the prehistoric to Joseon periods), a large library, sports center, and a variety of clubs and festivals that enhance the quality of campus life. From 2022 to 2027, the university has been accredited by the Institutional Evaluation for Quality Assurance of University Education (IEQAS), officially recognizing its excellence in educational quality and international student services. Daegu Catholic University has produced numerous leaders in various fields of Korean society, including Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan (the first cardinal in Korea). Based on its long-standing tradition in theology, humanities, and medical education, the university fosters individuals who practice ethical leadership and social service, who are active in politics, education, culture, medicine, the arts, and more. Among Catholic universities in Korea, it has played a pivotal role in laying the foundation and driving the development of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region, serving as a hub for close cooperation with the local community and for cultural and academic exchange. Support for international students is also among the best in the country. As an IEQAS-certified university, Daegu Catholic University offers various institutional advantages such as visa issuance, scholarships, and employment support. Systematic programs are in place for international freshmen, including entry orientation, academic orientation by major, Korean cultural experiences (such as visits to cultural heritage sites, Daedongje festival, food festivals), Korean language speaking contests, scholarship support (including government-sponsored GKS), dedicated dormitories (with single rooms available), and access to sports centers and various amenities. The Office of International Affairs and the Graduate School Administration Office have dedicated staff and assistants fluent in multiple languages, including English, Chinese, and Vietnamese, who provide friendly assistance with counseling, daily life guidance, course registration, and visa matters. In addition, a close-knit, customized academic and life support system is in place through academic advisors and department assistants to ensure international students’ satisfaction and adaptation. Some majors offer courses in English, and every year, dozens of international students devote themselves to their studies in a stable educational environment with scholarships. The campuses are located at major transportation hubs in Daegu and Gyeongsan, offering excellent accessibility. The main Hyosung Campus provides a pleasant site (about 860,000 square meters), a nature-friendly campus environment, modern dormitories, a library, a global lounge, a museum, and a wealth of learning and cultural infrastructure. Luga and Justino Campuses are also operated as specialized spaces for particular majors and research, enabling diverse academic experiences.
