Daegu Health College
Daegu Health College is a specialized university that leads the health and medical fields in South Korea, nurturing “practical, globally-minded health leaders.” Since its establishment in 1971 in Buk-gu, Daegu Metropolitan City, it has become a representative institution for specialized health education in the region and throughout Korea. As the first in the country to establish the Department of Optometry, it also boasts nationally recognized tradition and expertise in departments such as Dental Technology and Radiology. With a pleasant campus environment and excellent infrastructure—including a modern culture center, gymnasium, and the Daegu Art Center—Daegu Health College firmly upholds its identity as the “mecca of practical health and medical education.” The college’s greatest distinguishing feature is its system for cultivating health and medical professionals with strong practical skills. It offers 2- to 4-year programs, including the College of Nursing, health-related departments (such as Clinical Laboratory Science, Radiology, Dental Hygiene, Dental Technology, Physical Therapy, Optometry, etc.), engineering, social practice, and specialized master’s programs, all operated with a focus on hands-on training. Notably, it was the first in Korea to establish the Department of Optometry (1984), the second nationwide to establish Dental Technology, and its Department of Radiology is among the top in the country in terms of tradition and competitiveness. Industry-academia cooperation is also active, with strong connections to the university hospital, nearby major medical institutions, and local industries, resulting in high rates of field experience and employment for students. Graduates advance into the medical and health sectors not only in Daegu and Gyeongbuk but also nationwide, and recently, new departments and customized curricula have been introduced to meet the demands of future healthcare industries such as health management, biotechnology, rehabilitation, and medical technology. The university has produced not only highly skilled professionals but also many individuals who have made an impact in popular culture and various sectors of society. Alumni include mixed martial artist Kim Dong-hyun, film director Kang Hyoung-chul (“Scandal Makers,” “Sunny”), actors Baek Jin-hee, Solbi, and Yang Dong-geun, who are active in the entertainment and sports industries. In the health and medical fields, numerous alumni are working in health institutions, hospitals, public health centers, and pharmaceutical and medical device companies across the country, contributing to the advancement of Korean healthcare. Especially, the high reputation and adaptability in the field demonstrate that Daegu Health College is a university that “contributes to real society,” not just one that imparts academic knowledge. For international students, Daegu Health College is a highly attractive choice. Having acquired the International Education Quality Assurance System (IEQAS) certification for attracting outstanding international students, the university offers preferential benefits in visa issuance and scholarship support. The International Education Team provides close support for the daily life and academic adaptation of international students, and some major courses are offered in English as well as Korean. Various scholarship programs (for academic excellence, special admission, multicultural backgrounds, etc.) are available, significantly reducing tuition burdens according to academic achievement, and all new international students are given priority for dormitory (residence hall) placement. On campus, dedicated services for international students are well established, including an exclusive international student lounge, tutoring programs, cultural exchange events, and career consulting, providing substantial academic and daily life support. Recently, exchange programs with overseas universities and medical institutions have also been strengthened to foster global healthcare industry talent. The campus is located in Buk-gu, Daegu, where pleasant natural surroundings and urban life are harmoniously blended. More than ten specialized buildings—including the main building, culture center, and welfare center—along with a green sports field, sculpture park, and dormitories, provide state-of-the-art facilities. With excellent access to public transportation such as Daegu subway and buses, local living is very convenient. Living and accommodation costs are also more reasonable compared to major cities like Seoul. As “the center of health and medical education connecting practice and the future,” Daegu Health College is highly recommended for international students who wish to realize their dreams in Korea.
