Kongju National University
A center for education and research in Korea’s central region, Kongju National University boasts a deep history and tradition that began with the establishment of the Republic of Korea in 1948. Located in Shinkwan-dong, Gongju, Chungcheongnam-do, the university holds symbolic status as the region’s first regular university and features a diverse campus system, including Gongju (main campus), Cheonan (College of Engineering), and Yesan (College of Agriculture). Under the identity of being “a cradle of knowledge and talent, and a hub of regional innovation,” Kongju National University prioritizes nurturing practical, globally minded talent as its core value. In particular, the Department of History in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, established in 1990, has consistently produced domestic and international history experts through a solid educational system that connects undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs. The department offers a broad curriculum covering modern and contemporary Korean history, world history, and cultural heritage, as well as abundant opportunities for field studies at historical sites in Gongju and the Chungcheong region. Furthermore, Kongju National University has secured specialized competitiveness in teacher training, cultural heritage preservation, applied sciences, and engineering. The College of Engineering at Cheonan Campus and the College of Agricultural Life Sciences at Yesan Campus stand out in future industries, advanced technology, and sustainable agriculture, with active industry-academic cooperation and field training programs. Departments such as K-Culture, Game Design, Animation, and Nursing & Health, along with practice-oriented education, provide an environment that maximizes each student’s potential. Kongju National University also takes pride in its many distinguished alumni who have made an impact across various fields. Notable examples include actress Lee Bo-young (Department of Business Administration), former Miss Korea; hip-hop artist Gray (Department of Computer Engineering); Gaeko (Dynamic Duo, Department of Advertising Design); and broadcaster Do Kyung-wan (Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering), all of whom are active in entertainment, the arts, and broadcasting. In addition, many leaders in Korea’s education sector and public institutions are graduates of Kongju National University’s College of Education. This extensive network and social influence serve as a strong foundation for students’ futures. Having grown together with the local community for over 70 years, Kongju National University has contributed to the development of Korean society by fostering talented individuals with both competence and character. For international students, Kongju National University is an attractive choice. The university faithfully implements the government’s International Education Quality Assurance System (IEQAS), providing systematic support from admission to post-graduation career paths. Outstanding international freshmen are eligible for scholarships covering up to 60% of the admission and first semester tuition fees, and additional tuition reductions of 40% are available for those with excellent TOPIK or English scores. Students with excellent academic records and those who publish papers in international journals may receive full tuition waivers. The International Language Education Center offers intensive Korean and English language courses, and a variety of international exchange programs—including personalized counseling, mentoring, career support, and cultural experiences—are actively provided for international students. Dormitories are equipped with modern facilities, ensuring all international students can live safely and comfortably. Courses taught in English are also available by major, allowing students with limited Korean proficiency to continue their studies. The Kongju National University campus harmonizes a pleasant natural environment with modern infrastructure. Gongju, where the main campus is located, is the ancient capital of Baekje, offering rich historical and cultural heritage, a quiet and safe living environment, and affordable living costs. The city is conveniently connected to major cities such as Seoul and Daejeon within about an hour by express bus or KTX. Both on and off campus, a variety of restaurants, convenience facilities, libraries, gyms, and club rooms are available to actively support students’ daily lives and self-development. Kongju National University will be a reliable guide and companion, helping international students grow into “true intellectuals of Korea and global leaders.”
