Gyeongkuk National University
Gyeongkuk National University (GKNU) is a leading national comprehensive university in South Korea, with campuses located in the cities of Andong and Yecheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Established in 1947 as Andong Normal School, the university was newly launched in 2025 through the integration of Andong National University and Gyeongbuk Provincial University. Under its founding philosophy of “Truth, Sincerity, and Creativity,” GKNU is emerging as a glocal (Global + Local) hub of innovation, connecting the region with the world. As the only national comprehensive university in northern Gyeongsangbuk-do, it boasts a unique educational environment where tradition and innovation coexist. The greatest strengths of Gyeongkuk National University lie in its diverse academic structure and regionally specialized education, aimed at fostering convergent talent. The university operates 12 departments and 15 majors across five colleges (College of Humanities and Social Sciences & IT, College of Education, College of Health and Welfare, College of Life Science & Engineering, and College of Public Demand Talent), offering a total of 43 majors. GKNU particularly excels in life sciences and engineering, IT, and nurturing public talent for the local community. For example, specialized majors linked to the local agro-life industry, advanced ICT convergence talent programs, and practice-oriented education in social welfare and public administration are closely aligned with the industrial development of the Gyeongbuk region. In addition, four graduate schools—including the Graduate School of Administration and Management, Graduate School of Education, and Graduate School of Korean Cultural Industry—offer field-oriented master’s and doctoral programs, producing experts with both academic depth and practical competence. GKNU also takes pride in its distinguished alumni, who have made significant impacts across various sectors of society. Outstanding graduates are active in fields such as law, administration, education, and science, with many contributing to regional development and national public service. As a key driver of regional growth, the university operates a dynamic industry-academia-research network in close cooperation with the Gyeongbuk community. This practical collaboration provides strong advantages in student internships, employment connections, and entrepreneurship support. Gyeongkuk National University also offers top-tier support for international students in Korea. In 2023, it was selected as an “Excellent Certified University” in the International Education Quality Assurance System (IEQAS) conducted by the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Justice, providing various benefits such as simplified visa issuance procedures and expanded part-time work permits for international students. The university supports international students’ stable settlement and academic success through a curriculum offered in both Korean and English, a buddy program, career and employment counseling, customized scholarships (including merit-based and special scholarships for international freshmen), and priority dormitory placement. Every year, hundreds of international students from various countries achieve their dreams here, enjoying abundant opportunities for cultural exchange and networking. The Andong and Yecheon campuses offer a pleasant natural environment, modern facilities, and excellent transportation access, contributing to high student satisfaction. Dormitories, student welfare facilities, a variety of clubs and festivals, and local cultural experiences provide unforgettable memories for international students as well. Gyeongkuk National University will be a reliable partner for your growth in Korea and your journey to become a global talent who communicates with the world.
