Geumgang University
Geumgang University is a Korean-style liberal arts university located in Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do, Republic of Korea. Since its establishment in 2002, it has firmly maintained its identity as a “small but strong university” and a “leader in innovation for humanities and convergence education.” With its nature-friendly campus, small class sizes, and in-depth academic exploration, Geumgang University focuses on maximizing each student’s potential and global competency. The most distinctive feature of Geumgang University is its humanities-centered liberal arts education system, which includes the only Department of Buddhist Studies in Korea, as well as programs in History and East Asian Studies. The university designs its curriculum to combine traditional scholarship with practical fields such as cutting-edge ICT convergence and artificial intelligence, enabling students to acquire broad knowledge and critical thinking skills. Notably, over 25% of classes are conducted in English, and the university actively operates global education programs such as joint and dual degree systems. It has also established exchange agreements with leading universities worldwide, including California State University, Fullerton, and The George Washington University. In addition, Geumgang University boasts a vibrant campus culture with clubs, campus festivals, and sports competitions that foster students’ holistic growth and leadership. Despite its relatively short history, Geumgang University has produced original research achievements in the field of Korean humanities and has nurtured talented individuals who excel in various sectors of society. In specialized research areas such as Buddhist Studies and East Asian Cultural Studies, international academic exchanges with scholars at home and abroad are very active. After graduation, the number of alumni working in domestic and international research institutes, cultural organizations, global IT companies, and the education sector is steadily increasing. Above all, Geumgang University graduates are distinguished in their fields for their broad perspectives and profound humanities literacy. Support for international students is also one of Geumgang University’s strengths. Since 2012, it has been selected as a university certified by the International Education Quality Assurance System (IEQAS), providing additional benefits for international students in visa and scholarship applications. The university offers a systematic learning support system, including a dedicated counseling center for international students, an English clinic, intensive Korean language classes, and multimedia self-study spaces. More than 30% of all classes are conducted in English, and various scholarship programs, including the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), are available. The dormitory gives priority admission to international students, ensuring improved living conditions and a comfortable environment. Career consulting and networking programs are also provided to support employment in Korea after graduation. In the past three years, a significant number of international graduates have achieved outstanding employment results, entering domestic research institutes, IT companies, and more. The campus is located in a pleasant natural environment near downtown Cheonan, providing a quiet and safe learning atmosphere. Both on and off campus, transportation is convenient, and the university is well equipped with student infrastructure, including dormitories, various convenience facilities, libraries, and a gymnasium. Geumgang University is an ideal choice for international students seeking “small but special experiences” and “student-centered, customized growth.”
