Kumoh National Institute Of Technology
Located at the heart of Korea’s industrial powerhouse, the Gumi National Industrial Complex, Kumoh National Institute of Technology (KIT) is known as the “cradle of industrial and technological innovation.” Established in 1979 in Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk-do—the hometown of President Park Chung-hee and a forward base for national industrialization—this university has grown alongside Korea’s industrial development with the goal of nurturing advanced engineering talent. Across its two campuses (the main campus in Yangho-dong and the Industry-Academia Convergence Campus in Sinpyeong-dong), KIT actively promotes advanced technical education, hands-on industry-academia cooperation, and global exchange. Under the founding philosophy of “Truth, Creativity, and Integrity,” KIT has established itself as a hub for future-leading engineers and innovation leaders. KIT’s unique strength lies in its organic connection with the Gumi National Industrial Complex. With the campus directly adjacent to Korea’s largest advanced industrial complex (home to over 2,400 companies), students naturally acquire practical skills and creative problem-solving abilities required in the real world. In particular, its 23 undergraduate majors and graduate programs—including Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Information and Communication, New Materials, and Biomedical fields—feature industry-tailored curricula, corporate-linked projects, and customized industry-academia departments in partnership with leading Korean companies such as Samsung and LG. As a result, KIT is highly regarded among Korean engineering universities for its outstanding practical relevance. This is further demonstrated by regular engineering education accreditation in 11 engineering fields, 14 research institutes, over 30 industry-academia cooperation groups, and a significant increase in government and corporate research projects over the past three years. KIT also offers a variety of opportunities to develop global competence, including international exchange programs with 124 universities in 37 countries and global capstone design projects. KIT has continuously produced practical leaders who drive regional and national development. Notable alumni include Nam Yoo-jin, former Mayor of Gumi (Ph.D. in Business Administration), and Lee Cheong-hwa, current Professor of Mechanical Engineering at KIT (M.S. in Mechanical Engineering), who are enhancing the university’s reputation in politics, industry, and academia. KIT’s selection for the large-scale NURI project in 2004, its award in the university category of the Gyeongbuk Employment Awards, and participation and achievements in numerous government-supported projects such as the Electronic and Medical Device Industrialization Cooperation Project, all attest to KIT’s central role in Korea’s technological innovation. The university’s unique identity is further highlighted by its history hall and commemorative monuments reflecting President Park Chung-hee’s founding philosophy, while its outstanding graduates are key contributors to regional development and industrial modernization. For international students, KIT promises real opportunities for growth and a strong support environment. Various scholarship programs, including international exchange cooperation scholarships and special scholarships, are available to outstanding domestic and international students, with the average scholarship benefit per student reaching 3.3 million KRW (90% coverage rate) as of 2024. State-of-the-art dormitories that can accommodate all freshmen, practical living support such as the “1,000-won breakfast,” and a big data-based competency and career management system from admission to graduation and employment all greatly assist international students in settling in and planning their careers. To support global education, KIT offers English-only courses and international student support programs, as well as excellent opportunities for global competence development through exchanges with 124 partner universities in 37 countries, support for academic publications, and participation in international conferences. As a university certified by IEQAS (International Education Quality Assurance System), KIT offers significant advantages in visas, scholarships, and living support. Gumi is a city where advanced industry and tradition coexist, offering excellent accessibility to major cities such as Seoul and Busan. The campus boasts a park-like, pleasant environment and state-of-the-art facilities. Both on and off campus, a variety of clubs, festivals, cultural events, and sports facilities enrich both the academic and leisure life of international students. “A place to design your future within industry and connect with the world through practical engineering”—realize your dream of becoming a global engineer at Kumoh National Institute of Technology.
