Kyungpook National University
Kyungpook National University is a flagship national university located in Daegu, the gateway to southern Korea. Since its establishment in 1951, it has grown into a center of scholarship and innovation representing the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions. Its reputation as “a true regional prestigious university and a cradle of global leaders” is more than just a slogan. Kyungpook National University boasts a unique campus culture where tradition and the future harmonize, based on nearly a century of educational heritage and cutting-edge research capabilities. In addition to its main campus in Daegu, the university has expanded into a four-campus system including Sangju and Chilgok, creating a distinctive ecosystem where urban and rural areas, healthcare, and advanced science coexist. The true distinction of Kyungpook National University lies in the combination of academic depth and social engagement. As the only national university in Korea to have simultaneously established colleges of education, medicine, agriculture, and law, its historical background demonstrates the university’s deeply rooted comprehensiveness. In particular, the Department of History Education boasts a long-standing tradition that began at Daegu Normal School immediately after liberation, and systematically educates in four major fields: Korean history, East Asian history, Western history, and history education. As of 2023, the university comprises 17 colleges, 98 departments, and 139 research institutes, with approximately 33,000 students devoted to study and research on campus. Furthermore, Kyungpook National University clearly practices a “student-centered, global orientation” through annual scholarships totaling 77.3 billion KRW, an integrated student application (mobile student ID, QR code facility access, etc.), and active exchanges with prestigious overseas universities such as UC Berkeley, Yale, and Wisconsin. Kyungpook National University has produced talented individuals who exert social influence in various fields including culture, arts, sports, and politics. Notable alumni include novelist Lee Jung-myung (“The Painter of the Wind”), Yoon Ji-hyun, vocalist of the rock band Sinawe, Miss Korea Sun Yoon Mi-jung, broadcaster Park Ji-hoon, as well as numerous poets, announcers, and artists who have grown at this university. Such distinguished graduates from diverse fields are a testament to Kyungpook National University’s broad academic spectrum and creative environment. Moreover, the university’s history of leading educational democratization and regional development amid turbulent modern history, such as the Japanese colonial period and the Korean War, proves that Kyungpook National University is more than “just a university”—it is an educational institution with a social mission. For international students, Kyungpook National University is a place of special opportunity. As of 2023, over 2,100 international students from 74 countries are participating in regular and exchange programs. The university has been ranked first among national universities in Korea for ten consecutive years in the Ministry of Education’s IEQAS (International Education Quality Assurance System) certification, and was recently selected as a “Top Certified University,” the highest rating, providing various benefits such as streamlined visa issuance and government scholarship selection. Tailored programs for international students are systematically operated, including special Korean language classes, English thesis seminars, buddy programs, and career/employment support. There are also various scholarship systems, such as up to 100% tuition waiver for the first semester based on TOPIK scores, merit-based scholarships, and dormitory management fee scholarships. In addition, practical support such as English-taught courses, foreigner-friendly administration, priority dormitory placement, and counseling services are key strengths. The main campus in Buk-gu, Daegu, is located at a transportation hub, offering excellent domestic and international accessibility, and provides a pleasant learning and living environment where city and nature blend together. With modern libraries, museums and art centers, advanced science and medical facilities, and a student-centered welfare system, all infrastructure supports the growth of global talent. At Kyungpook National University, you will embark on a special journey that connects tradition and innovation, the local community and the world.
