Dankook University
Founded in 1947 as the first private four-year university in Korea after liberation, Dankook University is now a prestigious comprehensive university with dual campuses in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, and Cheonan, Chungnam Province. Affectionately known as “Dankook,” the university has played a central role in education, research, and social contribution under the guiding principles of “Hongik Ingan” and the mottos of “Patriotism, Independence, and Self-Reliance.” With the black bear, zelkova tree, and azalea as its symbols, Dankook University is evolving into a “global hub campus” where all students unite, communicate with the world, and grow together. Dankook University’s greatest strengths lie in its history of “firsts” and “challenges,” as well as its broad interdisciplinary education. In 1978, it became the first private university in Korea to establish a second campus (Cheonan), solidifying its status as a regional hub university. In 2007, the Seoul Hannam-dong campus was relocated to Jukjeon, Yongin, with a future-oriented vision, completing an innovative campus system. As of 2024, the university boasts 72 research centers, a network of over 450 overseas partner universities, approximately 1,600 international students, and more than 38,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Dankook University is especially renowned for its top-tier capabilities across all academic fields, including medical and health sciences such as the College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, and College of Pharmacy, as well as advanced sectors like engineering, software convergence, and biotechnology, and even arts, sports, and business. The Cheonan campus is recognized as a global center for Taekwondo training, while the Jukjeon campus excels in industry-academia cooperation in IT, content, and cultural industries, forming a “triple axis” of industry, education, and research. Dankook alumni have had a remarkable impact on Korean society and the world. Numerous sports stars such as Lee Eul-yong, a hero of Korea’s World Cup semi-final run, Oh Seung-hwan, an Olympic baseball gold medalist, and Kim Ki-hoon, a short track gold medalist, have grown here, as well as popular entertainers like Kang Kyung-heon and Kang Dong-ho in theater, film, and cultural arts. In the field of entrepreneurship and business, innovators like those from “Danverest” are making their mark. Dankook University has established itself as a “cradle of Korean leaders,” nurturing talent that represents Korea in various fields such as Korean Wave culture, sports, education, and medicine. Dankook University is a reliable choice for international students. With ten consecutive years of certification from the Ministry of Education’s IEQAS (International Education Quality Assurance System), it offers advantages in visa issuance and scholarship opportunities, and currently, about 4% of all students are international. English-taught courses are actively offered in major fields such as International Studies, Business, and Engineering, and a variety of scholarship programs are available for high scorers on the TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) and students from KOICA and UN LDC countries. Students can receive up to 80% scholarship benefits in their first year, additional incentives for achieving TOPIK Level 4 or higher, and have access to separate English tracks, reducing the burden of study. Both Jukjeon and Cheonan campuses are equipped with modern dormitories, offering double and quadruple rooms at reasonable costs (KRW 1.28–2.09 million per semester, 168 days), providing a safe and convenient living environment. Tailored programs for international students, such as DKU ISS, offer systematic support including global orientation, mentoring, career support, and counseling. Jukjeon campus is close to the Seoul metropolitan area (30 minutes to Gangnam via the Shinbundang Line), providing abundant cultural, shopping, and employment opportunities, while Cheonan campus boasts a pleasant natural environment and advanced medical and sports infrastructure. On campus, a variety of cultural and academic spaces such as libraries, gymnasiums, state-of-the-art research facilities, and museums are available, enabling international students to quickly adapt and pursue new dreams.
