Sogang University
“A Cradle of Intellectual Freedom and Global Leadership” – Sogang University is a leading private university in Seoul, founded in 1960 by the Roman Catholic Jesuits. Located at the heart of the Sinchon university district in Mapo-gu, Sogang University has built its reputation on elite, small-group education that combines academic rigor with a spirit of free inquiry, under the motto “Obedire Veritati” (Obey the Truth). Its 208,677㎡ campus is among the largest of Seoul’s major universities, offering an intimate educational environment where nature and the city coexist in harmony. By adopting the American liberal arts college model, Sogang’s identity lies in nurturing creative thinkers equipped with practical skills. Sogang University’s greatest strengths are its elite small-group system and a curriculum specialized in internationalization. Rather than simply limiting student numbers, Sogang features flexible academic systems such as personalized academic guidance, self-designed majors, double majors, and interdisciplinary programs. It was the first university in Korea to introduce English-taught courses for international students, and offers a wide range of classes conducted in both English and Korean. With 8 undergraduate colleges, 12 graduate schools, and over 8,000 undergraduates, students can choose from a variety of majors. In particular, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mass Communication, and Business Administration are highly regarded both domestically and internationally. Sogang maintains exchange partnerships with over 270 sister universities in 35 countries, and actively runs global internship and exchange programs through the Jesuit network (including Georgetown, Boston College, Sophia University, etc.). Innovative campus infrastructure, such as Mary Hall—the first university performance hall in Korea—and the open-access Loyola Library, fosters the integration of academics, arts, and daily life. Sogang University has produced numerous influential alumni in politics, economics, and culture. Leaders from various fields who have grown at Sogang include Park Geun-hye, the 18th President of South Korea; film director Park Chan-wook; actors Park Eun-bin and Nam Ji-hyun; broadcaster Sam Okyere; comedian Yoo Byung-jae; and singer Shin Hae-chul. Sogang graduates play pivotal roles in media, IT, finance, and the cultural industries, demonstrating the university’s focus on “practical intelligence.” The university’s history of innovation—including winning the Kyunghyang Education Award in 1966 and pioneering English-taught courses—proves that Sogang is a university ahead of its time. A distinct strength of Sogang University is its comprehensive support system for international students. Selected by the Ministry of Education as an IEQAS (International Education Quality Assurance System) certified university, Sogang offers significant advantages in student visas and scholarships for international students. Each year, hundreds of international students explore various majors through English-only courses and Korean language training programs. Those who achieve TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) Level 4 or higher are eligible to apply for various scholarships, including living expense scholarships (KRW 500,000–1,000,000 per month). Dormitories are prioritized for new international students, with modern facilities and convenient on-campus access. Comprehensive support programs are available, including the Center for Students with Disabilities, the Global Talent Center, and international student orientation. Exchange and internship programs with Jesuit universities worldwide—including in the US, Japan, and Europe—highlight the global stature of “Global Sogang.” Sogang University’s campus is centrally located in Seoul, offering excellent transportation access and proximity to youth culture and trendy urban life in areas like Sinchon and Hongdae. The campus blends lush green spaces with modern buildings, and students can experience a vibrant university culture through a variety of clubs, campus media, and festivals. Living up to its reputation as a “small but strong university,” Sogang University is the ideal choice for international students seeking to cultivate global leadership, creativity, and a warm sense of community.
