National Mokpo University is a national comprehensive university located in Muan County and Mokpo City, Jeollanam-do. It is recognized as an academic hub and a forward base of innovation in the southwestern region of Korea. Founded in 1946 as Mokpo Normal School, it was elevated to a comprehensive university in 1990. In 2026, it will be newly launched as an “integrated national university,” introducing for the first time in Korea a system that simultaneously offers both two-year and four-year degree programs. “A glocal (Global+Local) innovative university connecting the region and the world”—this is the identity of National Mokpo University. The university’s greatest distinction lies in its overwhelming competitiveness as a “glocal university.” In 2024, it was selected for the Ministry of Education’s Glocal University Project with the highest national rating (S grade), and in 2025, it will receive final approval to merge with nearby Jeonnam Provincial University, enabling the simultaneous provision of high-quality two-year and four-year educational programs. Covering a wide range of academic fields—including humanities, marine studies, engineering, and arts and physical education—it boasts exceptional capabilities in humanities content areas linked to the local community, such as the “History Content Major.” Its distinctive curriculum focuses on transforming the roots of the region into global value, with programs in modern and contemporary Namdo culture, Korean maritime civilization studies, and digital content development for cultural heritage.
