Kunsan National University
Kunsan National University, located in Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do, is one of Korea’s leading national universities. Since its founding in 1947, it has grown together with the local community under the educational philosophy of “Pursuit of Truth, Creation of Culture, and Social Service.” Situated at the heart of the Saemangeum region, where the sea, industry, and advanced agriculture coexist, Kunsan National University clearly defines its identity as a “creative and innovative university connecting the local community and the world.” The Miryong and Saemangeum campuses offer a wide range of education in the fields of humanities, social sciences, engineering, marine studies, and biotechnology. The university is especially recognized as a hub for regional history and cultural research, as well as a model case of industry-academia cooperation that combines practical skills and innovation. A key strength of Kunsan National University is that it is the only university in Korea with academic and research infrastructure directly linked to the world-renowned Saemangeum reclamation project. For example, the Department of History leads the excavation and analysis of historical and cultural resources in the Saemangeum and Jeollabuk-do regions, contributing to the establishment of regional identity and the development of cultural content. Other strengths include specialized programs in marine and bio fields, advanced software and AI departments, and curricula tailored to practical and future-oriented trends. With seven undergraduate colleges, four graduate schools, and nineteen research institutes, the university actively pursues field-oriented education and research. In particular, programs such as field training linked with local industrial complexes, start-up support, and employment connection are highly developed, giving graduates strong competitiveness in the job market. Tuition fees are also reasonable compared to the national university average (1,659,000 KRW for humanities and social sciences, 2,119,000 KRW for engineering), providing high educational value for the cost. Kunsan National University takes pride in its long history and contributions to the local community. It began as Gunsan Normal School in 1947, was promoted to a comprehensive university in 1991, and has continued to grow and evolve, including the integration of Gunsan Fisheries College in 1992. Throughout this process, the university has produced numerous educators, researchers, and community leaders, earning unique social trust in the fields of regional engagement and public service among national universities in the Jeollabuk-do area. The Department of History, in particular, has led the excavation and academic research of local history, spreading the cultural value of Saemangeum and Gunsan nationwide. Its model of nurturing practical talent and connecting university, community, and industry through industry-academia cooperation is regarded as exemplary in Korean higher education. For international students, Kunsan National University’s strength lies in its “practical support.” As a university certified for internationalization capability (IEQAS) by the Korean Ministry of Education, administrative procedures such as admission, visa, and scholarships are transparent and stable. Outstanding international students are eligible for full or partial tuition waivers, and various government (GKS) and university scholarship programs are available. Systematic language education is provided, including Korean and English courses (native speaker conversation, beginner-tailored courses, etc.), special English programs for freshmen, and mock TOEIC tests. The International Exchange Education Center offers dedicated support services for international students, such as visa assistance, daily life counseling, buddy programs, and more, helping students adapt quickly both academically and personally. Dormitories offer a pleasant environment at low cost, and various cultural and exchange programs on and off campus allow students of diverse nationalities to interact widely. The campus is close to the vast nature of Saemangeum, downtown Gunsan, and industrial complexes, allowing students to enjoy a balance of study, practical experience, and local life. Transportation is convenient, with excellent access to major cities nationwide via KTX, express buses, and city buses. In the dynamic atmosphere of the region, where the sea, ports, and new urban developments come together, students can develop a global perspective. Gunsan’s reasonable cost of living, diverse local culture, and safe, pleasant campus environment provide international students with an optimal environment for learning and growth.
