Chugye University For The Arts
Chugye University for the Arts is a private arts university located in Bukahyeon-dong, the artistic center of Seoul. Since its establishment in 1974 under the motto “Intellect, Creativity, Purification,” it has left a distinct mark on the Korean art scene. Alongside the convenience of being situated in the heart of the city, the university takes pride in its identity as a small, specialized arts institution that offers “in-depth arts education” and a culture of “close mentoring.” Chugye University for the Arts has served as a challenging stage for realizing artists’ dreams and as a bridge connecting tradition and modernity, as well as domestic and global arts. The university’s greatest strength lies in its expertise in the fields of “music, fine arts, literature, and media,” which are among the best in Korea. The College of Music produces numerous award winners and professional performers in both domestic and international competitions through specialized majors such as composition, orchestral music, piano, vocal music, and Korean traditional music. In particular, the Department of Korean Traditional Music focuses on the modern succession of Korean traditional music and boasts a distinguished faculty that includes recipients of the Korea Art Award and presidential prize-winning master singers. The College of Fine Arts offers practice-oriented education in various fields such as Oriental painting, Western painting, and printmaking, and its departments of Printmaking and Oriental Painting have produced award-winning artists and renowned illustrators in both domestic and international art exhibitions. The College of Literature and Media also features a curriculum that encompasses both creative and industrial aspects, including creative writing, media business, and media scenario writing. In this way, Chugye University for the Arts specializes in “cultivating core talent in each artistic genre” and has proactively introduced convergent education programs such as the Graduate School of Arts Management and the College of Convergent Arts to respond to the evolving cultural industry. Chugye University for the Arts has consistently produced prominent figures active in various fields, making a significant impact on the Korean arts scene. Notable alumni who began their studies here include actress Moon Chae-won, actor Jeon Kwang-ryeol, singer Lee Hae-ri (Davichi), Korean traditional musician Jeon In-sam, musical actress Lee Hye-kyung, and pianist Jang Mi-hye, representing a wide spectrum from popular culture to pure arts. Especially among graduates of the Department of Korean Traditional Music and the College of Fine Arts are key figures in the Korean art world, such as presidential prize winners in national competitions, master singers, renowned painters, illustrators, and chief judges of major art exhibitions. Their achievements clearly demonstrate how the university’s practice-oriented, artist-training philosophy translates into real-world success. Chugye University for the Arts is also an attractive option for international students. The university offers a 30% tuition reduction for the first semester to new and transfer international students who have completed at least two semesters at a Korean language institute. Additionally, depending on their TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) scores (levels 3–5), students can receive a separate language scholarship of up to 500,000 KRW. International students who enhance the university’s reputation through outstanding artistic activities or awards in international competitions may also be eligible for special scholarships upon recommendation from the Office of International Affairs. Those with excellent academic performance can benefit from merit-based scholarships, helping to alleviate the financial burden for international students. However, the university is not yet included in the IEQAS (International Education Quality Assurance System), and information regarding English-taught courses and dormitories requires separate inquiry. Nevertheless, the university has a well-established international student management system through dedicated departments such as the Office of International Affairs, providing active support for administrative and daily life needs from admission to graduation. Located in the center of Seoul, the campus offers excellent transportation access via subway and bus, and is close to major cultural and artistic venues, providing abundant opportunities for field experience and networking. Taking advantage of its status as a small, specialized arts university, Chugye University for the Arts fosters an educational atmosphere and mentoring culture that values each student’s creativity and individuality. For those who dream of growing as an artist in Korea, Chugye University for the Arts welcomes you as a “small but profound stage.”
